    Text Howard L. Anderson

    WESTBY, Wis. -- Howard L. Anderson, 77, of Westby died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Norseland Nursing Home in Westby. He was born May 22, 1926, to Alvin and Ella (Jothen) Anderson. He was confirmed at North Coon Prairie Lutheran Church and was a member of Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church.

    Howard served his country in World War II from 1944 to 1946 aboard the USS Marblehead, USS Neunzer and USS Pillsbury, ultimately as Navy third class ship's cook -- USN-I.

    On July 27, 1946, he was united in marriage to Mildred Irene Rumppe. Howard was a milk hauler for Sloane's until 1947. He farmed in rural Westby and Viroqua until 1967, when they moved to Westby and he became a full-time carpenter with a famous slogan of: "Did you see what I Saw?" Howard built and remodeled many homes in the area and also constructed many pieces of furniture.

    He served on the Westby city council and was a member of the VFW and American Legion. Howard enjoyed attending the Vernon County Fair (horse races) and Snowflake Ski Tournament. He loved and took pride in his own horses and those of his grandchildren.

    He was a collector of pocket watches, brass items and eagles, and took pride in his autos, especially his 1966 Ford. Howard loved to dance and made sure all his kids also knew how to dance.

    In addition to his wife, Mildred, Howard is survived by his five daughters, Shirley (Noel) Soltau, Carol (Thomas) Olson, Dianne (Jerrold) Buros, Alaine (Jerry) Abrams and Aline (Curt) Hess; 11 grandchildren, Scott (Angela) Dahl, Troy (Angella) Dahl, Jason Dahl, David (Heidi) Olson, Craig (Jennifer) Buros, Lisa Buros, Kyle Buros, Zac Abrams, Luke Abrams, Nathan Houghtaling and Kandis Houghtaling; two stepgrandchildren, Andrew and Kylie Hess; seven great-grandchildren, Anders Dahl, Davin Dahl, Zoe Dahl, Kayla Buros, Brendan Buros, Lillian Phillips and Karisa Cowles; two sisters, Esther Tryggestad and Lenora (Vern) Melgard; three brothers, Helmer (Hazel) Anderson, LeRoy (Joan) Anderson and Arnie (Katherine) Anderson; two sisters-in-law, Christine Anderson and Cleo Yttri; and special aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Alton, Phillip and Raymond "Dill"; and one brother-in-law, LaVerne Tryggestad.

    Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at 1 p.m. at North Coon Prairie Lutheran Church at Newry. Pastor Gary Daines will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military rites by Syverson-Funk American Legion and the Westby VFW. Friends may call today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Vosseteig Funeral Home,

    In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
