      CARL LUDWIG JOTHEN

Carl was born on August 16, 1876 at Westby, Wisconsin to Anders Jothen and Sigrid (Sin) nee Hoen. His parents were farmers. Cart attended school in the public school system until he was fifteen years old. Until he was twenty-two years of age he worked as a hired man and on the home farm. This was followed by teachers' training and a stint of teaching school. Cart then entered St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, graduating Friday, April 28 1905. Carl studied theology at the Seminary in Red Wing, Minn. where he graduated in 1908 as a Candidate in Theology. He was ordained at the Hauge Synod. His formal dress was the Prince Albert coat with "long tails".

In 1908, Carl was married to Gina M. Nelson. Gina had been born on July 13,1883 at Madison. Minnesota. Carl and Gina met as Gina had cooked at the Seminary. Through the years, Carl and Gina raised six children namely: Martha, Alice, Ruth, Oscar, Arthur, and Gladys.

Carl's first call was in Chicago, Illinois from 1908 to 1911. He then came to Canada to serve at Bardo Lutheran Church in Ryley, Alberta. He was there from 1911 to 1915. For three of those years, he commuted to serve Sharon Lutheran congregation at Irma. In 1915 Carl became a pastor in a different synod, that of the United Norwegian Lutheran Church in America and he moved to Melville, Saskatchewan. According to the 1917 Annual Report Den Norsk Lutherske Kirke i Amerika, Carl served the following congregations: Zion Lutheran at Plainview (located on SW 14-24-7 West of 2nd (or from Melville you go ten miles north, four miles west, and a half a mile south), Lunner Lutheran congregation near Southey, Norrona Lutheran congrega-tion west of Bulyea, Kristiania Lutheran congregation at Atwater, Spy Hill Lutheran congre-gation at Spy Hill, and a preaching place called Success in the Pleasant Hills postal district. He stayed there until 1919.

From 1920 to 1924, Carl served at Fairy Glen. Sask. This was a four-point parish which
included the following congregations: Carrot River Valley Lutheran, Melfort Creek Lutheran, Beaver Creek Lutheran at Ratner, and Red River Lutheran at Red River at Spruce Home north of Prince Albert. The next five years were served at Holland Lutheran Church in the HilIsley area south of Humboldt. Many members of his wife's family were members of this congregation. The parish at Holland also included the congregations of Iron Spring Creek Lutheran at Watson and Zion Lutheran near Englefield. While he was in this parish, he still traveled by horses and sleigh or buggy. While he served at Holland, their son Oscar died in the Humboldt hospital at the age of ten years due to complications resulting from measles and double pneumonia. Oscar was buried there, and then when his father accepted a call to a parish at Govan, Sask., Oscars body was exhumed and he was buried again in the St. Olaf Cemetery.

This parish at Govan included the following congregations: St. Olaf’s Lutheran Church northwest of Govan, Norrona Lutheran Church west of Bulyea, Lunner Lutheran Church northwest of Southey, and Bethel Lutheran church out of Viscount. It was during this time that Carl got an old Model T car, and occasionally the family would accompany him. His daughter Gladys was required to play the organ for services, whether she felt like it or not. When he preached at Viscount, he would take the train. By this time, Gina's sister Amelia and her husband Sig Hegg lived at Viscount. From the train, he would wait at their home until someone from the Bethel congregation could pick him up. He served this parish during the decade of the 1930's. There was light soil between Bulyea and Govan and this soil would drift so badly and pile up on the road so high that at times Carl would have to use gunny sacks to get traction for his tires.

In Govan there was a bachelor that used to hire Carl and Gina as well as Art and Gladys to help him during the harvest season. Gina would cook and Gladys would peel the vegetables. This was during the dry years and Carl did not always get paid for his ministerial duties. The money they made working for the farmer certainly helped their finances. One Thanksgiving a truck came from Bulyea bringing flour, chickens, wood, and so forth for the Jothen family. This was an emotional time for them. Through the years, Carl had cows, horses, and chickens, and seemed to make a living even if he did not get paid. Carl was a person who never complained.
In 1939, at the age of sixty-three years, Carl retired. He had problems with his hearing and was afraid for how it affected his ministry. From then on, he was available to do interim ministry. He was called to serve at a place in Manitoba and also to Rose Valley Sask., but he did not go to either of those places. In 1939, Carl began to serve a two-year call at Frontier, Sask. When they left Govan, they still owed $30.00 for groceries they had charged at a store ran by Jewish people. When they got to Frontier, they thanked God that they were able to pay off the debt and send the money to Govan.

From 1941 - 1944, Carl served congregations at Macoun, Midale, and Wilcox. After serving for a time in Estevan, he retired and moved to St. Walburg, Sask. because their eldest daughter lived there. Gina was not well and during the time they lived in St. Walburg, she suffered four strokes. After awhile, they moved to Torquay, Sask. to live with their daughter Gladys and her husband Arnold Knutson for the winter. From there they moved to Estevan to their own home. Gina passed away on February 2, 1952 and is buried at Estevan, Sask.
Carl had a sale and never told the family. He moved again to be with Gladys and Arnold and then he moved out to Langley, BC to the home of his son Arthur and daughter--in-law Margaret.. Carl had a little place of his own behind their home. In 1955, Carl moved to the Lutheran Sunset Home in Saskatoon, Sask. Although he thought there would be nothing for him to do, he was able to do some gardening at the Home. In the summer of 1964, the Jothen family gathered for a reunion. Carl had often commented how he would like to see the kids: his daughters in Ontario and his son Art in BC A few days after the reunion, Carl got up in the night and walked around. He fell and broke his hip and was then hospitalized. He came through the surgery, but died from pneumonia. He was coherent to the end of his life. He died July 24, 1964 at the Lutheran Sunset Home. He was buried at Estevan, Sask. In his ministry, his main emphasis had always been to preach the Gospel.

The family name was actually Pederson. However, there were so many Pedersons in the area of the United States where his ancestors lived, that they chose Jothen as their family name, since that was the name of the place where they came from in Norway.
