GINA MARIE NELSON JOTHEN
Gina was born on July 13, 1883 at Madison, Wisconsin to Sjur Peter and Mary Nelson. Sjur’s father with the family name Robotten, had died when Sjur was young. His mother had remarried to a man by the name of Neilson. and then that family name was changed to Nelson. Gina was raised in a family with eleven children. Her father was a storekeeper and a farmer. As a young woman, she found employment as a cook at the Lutheran Seminary in Red Wing Minn, In 1908 she married Carl Ludwig Jothen, who had been born August 16, 1876 at Westby, Wisconsin. Carl was a 1908 graduate of the Red Wing Seminary and he was ordained by the Hauge Synod. They had forty-four years of marriage and raised six children: Martha, Alice Ruth, Oscar, Arthur and Gladys.
Gina and Carl began their married life in Chicago, Illinois where Carl served a congregation from 1908 to 1911. From 1911 to 1915 they lived at Bardo. Alberta. Her husband then joined the United Norwegian Lutheran Church in America and they moved to Saskachewan where he served congregations out of Melville, from 1915 to 1919. Carl not only served Zion Lutheran Church at Plainview, some fourteen and a half miles out of Melville. he also served congregations, Southey, Bulyea, Atwater, Spy Hill as well as one more preaching place in the Meliville vicinity.
In I 920, they moved to Fairy Glen, Sask. where Carl served four congregations for the next four years. Their next move, in 1924, took them to Holland Lutheran Church in the HilIsley area south of Humboldt. In 1910, Gina's parents and several of her brothers and sisters had moved to Canada and had settled in the HilIsley area. Her father had bought land and farmed in this area. The Nelson family were members of this Holland Lutheran Church. What a joy it must have been for Gina and her family to live near relatives. Besides Holland, Carl also served congregations at Watson and south of Englefleld. While they lived at
Holland their ten-year old son Oscar died in the Humboldt hospital. His death was a result of complications suffered from measles and double pneumonia.
In 1927, the Jothen family moved to Govan and they exhumed Oscar’s casket and re-buried him in St. Olaf's Cemetery located northwest of Govan. Carl served the congregations St. Olaf Lutheran Church of Govan, Norrona Lutheran Church of Bulyea, Lunner Lutheran Church of Southey, and Bethel Lutheran Church of Viscount for eleven years. By the time the Jothen family lived at Govan, Gina's sister Amelia and her husband Sig Hegg lived at Lac Vert, Sask. Several summers, Carl and Gina and their family would drive in the Model T up to Lac Vert where they would visit with their relatives and pick raspberries. Gina would can these berries for the winter. From 1939 and following, Carl served in interim ministry in the following places: Frontier, Sask. and then the parish consisting of Macoun, Midale, and Wilcox.
Gina was a very talented person. She played the guitar and provided special music during the services. She was a jolly, out-going person, who understood youth and encouraged Luther Leagues. Gina was able to make something out of what appeared to be nothing. She was also a good seamstress. Her cooking abilities always stood her in good stead and she and her family worked during harvest time for several years for a bachelor at Govan. He paid them for their work and this helped them financially during the "Dry Years". Carl did not always receive the payment that was due him for his services as pastor. In her later years, she learned to make flowers and doll furniture out of tin cans.
As for Gina's family of origin, she had two brothers that settled in North Dakota and California. Several of her family moved to Canada including a brother Fred and two sisters who resided at Lac Vert, Sask: Lilly and Frank Darling and Amelia and Sig Hegg.
In their retirement, they lived for a time in St, Walburg, Sask. where their oldest daughter Martha had a store and post office. This was a difficult time for Gina, for while they lived there, Gina suffered four strokes. Gina and Carl moved south to Torquay where they lived for one winter with their daughter and son-in-law Gladys and Arnold Knutson. From there they moved into Estevan and into their own home. Gina died on February 2. 1952 and is buried at Estevan Sask.
As for her family: Carl lived for a few years in Langley, B.C. near their son Art. He spent his last years at the Lutheran Sunset Home in Saskatoon, Sask. where he died July24. 1964.
- Martha - deceased Feb 18, 1978 Drumheller, AB
- Alice - deceased 1999 Welland Ont.
- Ruth - Living in Alliston, Ont.
- Oscar died at the age of ten and was buried at Holland Lutheran Church, south of Humboldt. He was later reburied in the St. Oscars Cemetery, northwest of Govan, Sask.
- Art married Margaret Whitsell and lives in 100 Mile House BC
- Gladys married Arnold Knutson and she has four children. They are retired and living in Camrose, Alberta.
